Book Blogger Hop: 8/25/17

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer
Have you ever read a book written in a foreign language you might be fluent in, and then read the same book in English?
I'm not fluent in any other languages other than English, so I haven't read a full book in another language. I did take a couple of semesters of German in college so I've read some of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's writings in German. I like side-by-side translations, like this one for The Erlking/Erlk├Ânig. I've read a lot of novels translated into English from other languages.

1. Atonement by Ian McEwan: This novel (and movie) is amazing but will absolutely crush you. However, it's worth it.
2. Madame Bovary by Gustav Flaubert: This novel was always interesting to me because it shows the dangers of having fantasies about life and romance to the point where you can't enjoy your actual life and relationships.
3. The Painted Veil by W. Somerset Maugham: Set in the middle of a cholera epidemic you know it's not going to end well, but you're still not prepared. The movie adaptation is really amazing…
